a party (series) inspired by

the 1932 film shanghai express,

about an eccentric cast of characters

traveling from peking to shanghai.  each

soirée takes place at a different stop along

the imagined route of that train. this time,

we’ll be stopping over in a subterranean

harlem speakeasy in the late years of

the harlem renaissance, and on

the eve of the repeal of

prohibition.

harlem, known for its mix

of artists, musicians,

and writers.

ATTIRE  &  GUESTS:

high glamour, dressy vintage,

1920‘s/1930‘s evening or cocktail attire,

vintage drag, eclectic attire, or however you

might have dressed for an evening at the most

happening speakeasy in the midst of the harlem

renaissance. your fellow guests might include

langston hughes, bessie smith,, zora neale

hurston, duke ellington, josephine

baker, ethyl waters, or

marcus garvey.


PLEASE NOTE DRESS CODE:

casual attire not admitted.

no jeans, t-shirts, tennis shoes,

or baseball caps. you’ll have

more fun if you

dress up!

LOCATION / FOOD / BAR:

the soirée will be at the

Alley  Cat,  a  sexy,  subterranean,

speakeasy style nightclub located in the

former mechanical basement of the beekman

hotel. the club has japanese inspired cocktails

and small plates by star chef tom colicchio.

you can enter through the hotel, but

coming from the alley is so

  much more fun . . .
